BEFORE THEY TELL OUR STORIES
Frankie’s Episode
BTTOS x John Jay Screening
April 14th, 2026
Before They Tell Our Stories is a documentary series that explores the lives of LGBTQ+ communities as they move through the world. The first season focuses on higher education, documenting individuals navigating queer visibility alongside racial stigma and the layered realities of intersectional identities.
Episode 1 centers on students and faculty members at Medgar Evers College, a historic Black institution located in the heart of Brooklyn’s vibrant Caribbean community. Through intimate conversations, the episode highlights how race, gender identity, sexuality, and culture intersect within academic spaces. At an institution founded in the legacy of civil rights leader Medgar Wiley Evers, these stories exist within a broader historical continuum of resistance, education, and empowerment.
Before They Tell Our Stories is rooted in the preservation of histories that are too often overlooked or erased. By documenting moments of reflection, everyday joy, struggle, and activism, the series captures a living archive of BIPOC LGBTQ+ experiences.
“If you are silent about your pain, they’ll kill you and say you enjoyed it.” – Zora Neale Hurston.
